Dorothy M. Beach (Age 79) “Mema”

MARY LOUISE CARTA

Mary Louise Carta, age 82, a lifetime Washingtonian, died on Saturday, March 23, 2019, at Sunrise of Chevy Chase, a caring and loving nursing home.

From an early age, Mary Lou demonstrated her uniqueness as a free-spirited Catholic girl and a nourishing spiritual woman.  As a young girl, she played several sports at Raymond Playground in D.C. with her older brothers and sisters and was proficient in tennis and softball.  After graduating from the Academy of the Holy Names, she ultimately became the Promotion Director for Wheaton Plaza and Tyson’s Corner Mall for ten years.  She then went into real estate until a year before her passing and was a caring agent who went above and beyond to treat all of her customers like family.  Her Catholic faith was always a dominate factor in her life, and for many years, she was an active member of the Neocatechumenal Way and the Sodality at St. Michael’s the Archangel Catholic Church and as such developed many lasting friendships with the women and priests with whom she interacted.   The word of God was always on her lips, and she passed out holy cards and Catholic booklets to everyone she met.  She even made it her business to give pictures of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to almost all of the policeman in Montgomery County.  Growing up in a musical family, she loved songs by the all-time greats and dancing and singing after dinners and at get-togethers.  She loved being on the open road from dawn until dusk and being with her family, and she was loved by many.  Beloved Sister, aunt and friend, all will remember her strong faith in God and her delightful humor and playfulness, but she is now safe in heaven with her mom, dad (Cecelia and Salvatore Carta), her sisters, Joyce and Julie, and in the hearts of all who knew and loved her and will be remembered as a bright, shining light in the various communities and churches she served.

Mary Lou is survived by brothers, Joseph Carta of Glenwood, Maryland, Michael Carta of Lewes, Delaware, and Margaret Street of Rockville, Maryland, many nieces, nephews, and their families.

 The family will greet friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday March 30, 2019, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 805 Wayne Ave, Silver Spring, MD.  The funeral Mass will immediately follow at 10:30 a.m.  Note to those attending  Please do not park in the large Whole Foods Parking lot (YOU WILL BE TOWED). There is parking available across the street in the school parking lot and public parking is available one block south of the church.

The Carta family would like to extend their gratitude to all of Mary Lou’s friends, Rondani, her friend and caretaker, the staff at Holy Cross Hospital, Holy Cross Hospice and Sunrise of Chevy Chase nursing home in Silver Spring, Reverend Michael Breise, Deacon Curtis Rodney, Monsignor Eddie Tolentino, Rev. Dan Leary, Rev. Saulo Vincente, and Rev. Alberto Biondi for their support, attentiveness, prayers and loving care.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mary Lou’s name to St Michaels the Archangel Catholic Church.

DAVID LEE UNGER (Age 71)

On Saturday, March 23, 2019, of Laurel, MD. Beloved husband of Cheri Stamates Unger; father of Karen Loehr (Bill), Kathy Gaenzler (Steve) and step-daughter Elizabeth Davic; grandchildren Christopher Davic, Aidan and Jenna Loeher Grace and Andrew Gaenzler. Also survived by his sister Janice Boyd and nephews Armand and David Boyd. PAUL JOSEPH DeMARCO, Jr. (Age 94)

Paul Joseph DeMarco, Jr. (Age 94) Died March 21, 2019 – The first day of spring is a fine day to begin a new life! He lived an honorable life and his legacy will continue to live on in our hearts and through the charities he supported. At the end, Paul was smiling and peaceful after suffering from pneumonia. He is survived by chosen family, Marie and Bernie Klein, Willie Yenney and family, James Vakas and family. We are grateful for Velma Lewis, his devoted caregiver, who brought Paul joy and kindness so reliably for the last 2 years. JIM THEODORE CHEAKALOS

Jim Theodore Cheakalos passed away Saturday, March 23rd, 2019 in Silver Spring, Maryland at 98 years old. Jim was born and raised in Vourvoura, Greece, a small mountain village on the outskirts of Tripoli, on April 20th, 1920, and moved to the United States in 1938, where he enlisted in the United States Army and served in World War II in the 10th Armored Division. In 1956 Jim married his wife, Barbara, and the two remained married and in love for 63 years. Jim was a businessman and entrepreneur, having several successful ventures in the hospitality industry, namely restaurants and hotels. Jim was always admirably gentle and patient with everyone he met. He also was known to have an extraordinary green-thumb and was able to grow anything he planted in the ground. Despite the difficulties he faced throughout his life, he always persevered. He was a loving father and grandfather who always looked out for his family who will dearly miss him. Jim is survived by his loving wife, Barbara, as well as his sons Theodore, Alex, and Taso; his legacy also lives on by his grandchildren Barbara and Demetri. Relatives and friends may call at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard West, Silver Spring, MD, (Valet Parking), Wednesday, March 27, 2019, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.  Martin M. Dowd

On March 2, 2019, Martin M. Dowd passed away due to complications from the flu. He was 81. Dowd was born on April 18, 1937. He was the second of five children born to Michael and Peggy Dowd. He attended Nativity grade school on Georgia Avenue, Mackin Catholic High School, and the Catholic University of America (CUA). At CUA, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1960 with a concentration in Art; he played on the varsity tennis team for four years (two as captain); and he was the sports editor for the student newspaper. Upon graduating from college, Dowd served in the United States Coast Guard and then went to work as a medical illustrator at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, located on the campus of Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Northwest Washington, DC. After 42 years of civil service, he retired from the federal government in 2003. Contemporaneous with his full-time employment, he coached the Catholic University Men’s Tennis Team on a part-time contract for 52 years accumulating 521 victories. He was twice named Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Coach of the Year in 1994 and 2000 and still ranks third among all-time mens tennis coaches in the CAC with 114 wins and a .666 winning percentage (114-57). Dowd coached over 500 student-athletes at CUA, including 56 all-conference selections, (32 in the CAC and 24 in the Landmark Conference). In 2014, he was elected to the CUA Athletic Hall of Fame, and the following year, the University named the tennis courts after him and his wife to recognize the significant impact that both Marty and Jone had on the men’s and women’s tennis programs at Catholic. Dowd retired as the men’s tennis coach at Catholic following the 2014-15 season after 44 winning seasons and a career record of 562-374 (.600). He remains the longest-tenured head coach in the history of CUA athletics and owns the second-most wins. While at CUA, Martin met his wife, Jone Rastas. They were married in 1965 and had four children, Dana, Jennifer, Michael and Tara, and all three daughters played on the CUA women’s tennis team; Michael received a scholarship to play men’s tennis at Division I George Washington. Of Dowd’s passing, CUA Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics Sean Sullivan said the following: “Marty was perhaps appreciated for more than simply being a tremendous coach. His kindness, warmth, gentle spirit, love of his family and deep commitment to the humane growth of his student-athletes, made him unique, especially in this increasingly demanding world of competitive athletics. His heart was always in the right place. I can unequivocally say that I personally came away from any interaction with Marty, feeling better, feeling happier. And I imagine he did this for so many others as well.” Dowd is survived by his wife, Jone, children Dana, Jennifer, Michael and Tara, grandchildren Anthony, Anna, Kasey, Margaret, and Devin; and siblings Kevin, Margaret, and Maureen. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at 10:30AM at the Church of the Resurrection, Burtonsville, Maryland. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tennis Team Programs at the Catholic University of America.

SHIRLEY KENEALY NOONE (Age 87)

On Thursday, March 21, 2019, of Wilmington, DE, formerly of Potomac, MD.  Beloved wife for 58 years of the late Paul T. Noone, M.D.; mother of Julie Nelson (Steve), Paul Noone, Jr. (Mary), Donna Hoyle (Mark) and Sheila Montooth (Edward); grandmother of David, Karen, Kevin, Kaitlyn, Mathew, Davis, Emerson, Brittany, Christopher, Stephanie, Eddie, Tommy and Joey.
